Pippali (Piper longum Linn.)is an herb that belongs to the family of Piperaceae, it is an aromatic, thin, and crawling flowering plant. Piper longum is generally known as the long pepper or the Indian long pepper (Pipli).
It is popularly used as a flavoring and additive agent in the preparation of diverse foods and herbal preparations. It is indigenous to the indo- Malaya region and is mostly cultivated in India, Indonesia, Timor, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and the region of Malaysia.
In India, it is mainly cultivated in the central Himalayas to Assam, Khasi, and Mikir hills and the lower hills of West Bengal along with evergreen forests of Western Ghats from Konkan to Kerala and ending towards The Nicobar Islands.
In different diseased conditions, Piper longum has been used as a healing agent. The root and fruit of Piper longum herb are used as an analgesic, for bronchitis, anti-asthma, and anti-irritant. Besides root and stem, the whole plant is used for healing a variety of illnesses conventionally.
Pippali Plant Description
Piper longum or so-called pippali is a lasting long, thin climber with arboreous roots, crawling, and jointed stem with fleshy fruits embedded in the spikes. Pippali branchlets are erected, swelled nodes with glamorous.
The leaves layout is an alternate, egg-shaped, apex acute to acuminate with entire margins. The formations of both male and female plants are similar in the structure of spikes.
The Male Piper longum spikes are greenish-yellow, cylindrical fleshy with small flowers and the female spikes are erect and yellow.
The male spikes are loner and thin when compared with female spikes. Both plants have a fruit spike that is oblong, cylindrical berry red, when ripe or black they are spherical with an aromatic odor with a pungent taste.

What is Rasayana?
Rasayana is a unique therapy that contains different structures of rejuvenation. The word Rasayana derives from two words (Rasa +Ayana).
Word Rasa literally means the essence of something and the Ayana indicates the method by which Rasa is carried to all the body tissues for biochemical metamorphosis (Rasakriya).
In other words, it explains that anything consumed within the body in the form of food or medication is first resynthesized into (Rasa Dhatu) the primary plasma tissue.
The theory of Rasayana is derived from these two principles of conservation and transmutation of energy. The main objective of Rasayana therapy is to govern to improve physical, mental, and ethical character.

Pippali Rasayana
There are many ayurvedic Rasayana (vitalizes) describe in Ayurveda among them Pippali Rasayana is one of the most favored remedies. Traditionally, it includes Pippali and Butea monosperma (Palash). The main Ingredient Pippali is also referred to as Piper longum and as Indian long pepper, sometimes as Javanese.
Pippali is primarily cultivated for its fruit and is dried under the shadow and used as a spice up and flavoring, it tastes similar to black pepper. Pippali is helpful for cold and cough-related illnesses; it is often combined with black pepper and ginger to form the famous Trikatu (Three Spices).
Pippali Rasayana Dosage
The Pippali dose or other doses in Ayurveda mostly depend upon age strength and the disease conditions within the person. However, one can start to take five, seven, eight, or ten long pepper days simultaneously with honey and ghee for a period of one year.
The person who wishes to get rid of consumption, cough, hiccup, dyspnea, piles, throat infections, anemia, irregular fever, and assimilation disorders should take a course of long pepper soaked with the alkali prepared of Bengal kino and fried in ghee.
It should be taken simultaneously with honey, three in the morning three before the mid-day meal, and three after. Start with consuming with one number, increase up to ten on each next day to ten days, and consume with milk.
The dose should be decreasing in the same manner (reducing by ten each day to one). A diet such as boiled sastika rice should be consumed with milk and ghee when medication is taken.
How to prepare Pippali Rasayana?
Ingredient

- Pure Ghee Clarified Butter
Take 100gms of Pippali powder, add 80gms of honey into it then mix both ingredients with 100gms of ghee.
Note: The dose should be taken based on the doctor’s advice. Special care should be taken while administering this medicine to children. This is usually administered over a period of 2 – 4 weeks time. The dose depends on digestion capacity.

Pippali Churna ( Powder )Uses and Benefits
- Digestion: Take one to six grams of Pippali Powder; mix with 200 to 300 ml of buttermilk and consume.
- Singer’s voice: Take 1 gram of pippali powder, take a small quantity of ghee, and mix it with 1 tsp of honey, consume this mixture twice a day.
- Lungs: Take 2 grams of pippali powder and 2 gm of honey mix it and consume it thrice a day.
- Respiratory: Take 2 tsp pippali powder boil in 4 parts of milk and one part of water for a few minutes and then drink. Repeat this dose for 10 days.
- Hemoglobin: Take pippali powder and Amalaki Powder into equal quantities mix them and consume this mixture twice a day with honey in doses of half tsp.
Pippali Side Effects
Since it is so popularly used in cuisine and folk medicine, it is, in general, assumed to be safe in moderate doses. Though as the fruits, it is proclaimed to have preventative action in experimental models, its usage during pregnancy and lactation must be avoided.
The Piperine may impede enzymatic drug biotransformations, resulting in the repression of hepatic aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) and UDP – glucuronyl transferase, and change the pharmacokinetic parameters of barbiturates and phenytoin.[1]
